Join Property Rights Ohio and Farm-To-Power for an expert panel discussion on the importance of landowner rights in renewable energy development. As renewable energy projects continue to be considered across Ohio, it's important to maintain the integrity of individual property rights for those landowners involved. Learn about these rights and their implications in energy development, how they are being threatened at the state and local level, and why it's crucial to protect them. The Ohio Farmers Market Network is hosting an annual conference that will include workshops, presentations, and panel discussions designed to improve and enhance Ohio’s farmers markets and direct-to-consumer farmers and food entrepreneurs. Ohio Soil Health Week provides a time and space to celebrate, honor, and protect Ohio's soils. This weeklong celebration includes outreach, education opportunities, and events to raise awareness around Ohio's most valuable natural resource: our soil. Join Great Council State Park for an interactive presentation learning all about how soils form under prairie landscapes, why midwestern soils are considered "prime" for agricultural use, how we can implement more sustainable agriculture practices, and rediscover how native cultures farmed in sync with nature. The presentation will be followed by a short hike through the prairie down to the Little Miami River and back. There will be a guided tour of Great Council State Park, the museum dedicated to learning about the Shawnee Indians who once lived in the area. This event will be suitable for most ages, including children, adults, and seniors. The goal of this event is to educate Ohioans on how the soils in this region developed, the importance of caring for this important natural resource, and what we can all do to promote soil health. This presentation will be given by Linsey McFadden, a graduate student completing a Master’s in Soil, Water, and Ecosystem Sciences this year. The guided tour of Great Council will be given by Naturalists from Great Council State Park. The Wood Soil and Water Conservation District is participating in the Ohio Soil Health Week celebration by offering “Make a Model Soil” kits and a “Soil Your Undies” display. The public is invited to visit the district office to pick up a kit and take a look at the impact of soil health firsthand. Please note that the district office is closed on Tuesday, November 11, for Veterans Day.
Join staff from Rural Action’s Sustainable Agriculture, Forestry, and Watersheds programs for a lively discussion about how healthy soils impact farm viability, food nutrition, plant diversity, and clean streams. Soil Health Week in Montgomery County is a celebration of regenerative soil practices that you can apply to your own garden or farm. Local organizations and independent professionals are coming together to educate guests on how proper soil management can make a lasting impact on the environment. The Foodbank Inc. will offer guided tours of its urban garden, showcasing regenerative practices such as composting, biodiversity, interplanting, and the complete avoidance of pesticides and fertilizers. Guests will also explore our hydroponic lettuce greenhouse, which features beneficial insect integration, a custom nutrient blend tailored to Dayton’s water, a recycled water system, and sustainable growing techniques. Presentations will also educate guests with practical knowledge on how to build healthy soil systems in their own backyard garden or farm. Whether you're a seasoned grower or just starting out, Soil Health Week is your chance to learn, connect, and take action. Brandt Family Farm grows corn, soybeans, wheat, and a variety of other cereal grains sold through the on-farm cover crop business, Walnut Creek Seeds. For more than 50 years, the Brandt family has been committed to soil conservation and building healthy soil. This will be a full-day program at the Antioch Farm, a hub of sustainability and hands-on learning at Antioch College. This event is designed for farmers from all backgrounds, practitioners, researchers, and community leaders who are passionate about soil health, sustainable agriculture, and collaborative project development. City Folk’s Farm Shop will host a special Ohio Soil Health Week celebration to highlight the importance of healthy soil in growing nutrient-dense food, supporting thriving gardens, and building resilient ecosystems. The main event will take place on Friday, November 14, from 3–5 p.m. at City Folk’s Farm Shop. This gathering is designed for home gardeners, urban growers, small farmers, and community members interested in practical ways to improve their soil health. The program features: A storewide sale on all soil and amendments (continuing through the weekend); Ted, from Ohio Earth Foods, available to answer individual questions and provide guidance on soil fertility and amendment strategies; Paisley from City Folk’s Farm Shop, sharing the benefits of Bokashi composting as a method to recycle food waste into a powerful soil-building tool. In celebration of Ohio Soil Health Week, join Community Food Initiatives and Gina Scarano and Ross DiPenti of Farm Star to learn to make high-quality, biologically rich, and diverse thermophilic compost teaming with microbes! Gina is a Certified Lab-tech and consultant through Dr. Elaine Ingham's Soil Food Web School. Community Food Initiatives invites backyard, community, and small farm growers to join us at Farm Star for a hands-on workshop and farm tour with a focus on building soil health. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of soil science and the role microorganisms play in helping us grow more vigorous and healthy crops. They will tour the small-scale farm, which is in the process of transforming dirt into soil through the use of living compost and liquid bio-amendments that contain the full spectrum of the soil food web. Attendees will walk around and examine a variety of garden beds and stages of composting, collect and view samples under the microscope, and discuss the role microorganisms play in helping to mitigate flood/drought conditions and grow healthier crops.
