Soil Health Week in Montgomery County

Soil Properties & Web Soil Survey
Lucas Soil and Water Conservation District Office 3350 Hill Avenue, Toledo, United StatesGuest Speaker Derrick Freshcorn is a Wetland/Soil Conservationist Compliance Specialist for the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS). During his class, he will walk through a soil analysis using Web Soil Survey and provide other visual demonstrations using soil samples. Derrick is originally from Hardin County, where he grew up around agriculture. He earned a Bachelor of Science from The Ohio State University, majoring in plant pathology and minoring in soil. He presently works on Farm Bill Compliance for NRCS and was formerly a soil scientist at the state office. This event will be held in the main room of the Lucas SWCD office and is open to all who are interested in learning more about your soil and improving soil health. Build Your Own Living Compost Workshop with Tour of Farm Star
Farm Star 37600 Chase Run Road, Albany, United StatesIn celebration of Ohio Soil Health Week, join Community Food Initiatives and Gina Scarano and Ross DiPenti of Farm Star to learn to make high-quality, biologically rich, and diverse thermophilic compost teaming with microbes! Gina is a Certified Lab-tech and consultant through Dr. Elaine Ingham's Soil Food Web School. Community Food Initiatives invites backyard, community, and small farm growers to join us at Farm Star for a hands-on workshop and farm tour with a focus on building soil health. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of soil science and the role microorganisms play in helping us grow more vigorous and healthy crops. They will tour the small-scale farm, which is in the process of transforming dirt into soil through the use of living compost and liquid bio-amendments that contain the full spectrum of the soil food web. Attendees will walk around and examine a variety of garden beds and stages of composting, collect and view samples under the microscope, and discuss the role microorganisms play in helping to mitigate flood/drought conditions and grow healthier crops. Growing Great Figs: A Farmer-to-Farmer Skill Share
ZoomFigs are one of the easiest and most rewarding fruits to grow, even in Ohio and other cold winter climates. Join this online workshop to learn about selecting varieties, planting, seasonal care, winter production, and simple propagation techniques. Participants will explore fig varieties that perform well in the Midwest and receive practical tips for growing figs in containers or in the ground.
