This full-day event at the Ohio Capitol will start with advocacy training\, move to meetings with your state legislators\, and end with an optional group debrief and happy hour at Jackie O’s On Fourth. \nWe’ll be educating our legislators on soil health and advocating for their support of soil health policies. All registrants will receive information to help them schedule meetings with their legislators. \nA light breakfast and complimentary lunch will be included in your registration. DESCRIPTION:Join the Ohio Organic Farmer Researcher Network (OOFRN) for an on-farm research seminar presented by Wayne County farmer and soil health devotee Matt Falb. Matt has a great mind for research and has partnered with several Ohio State researchers at the nearby Wooster campus and around the state and is currently on the executive board of Ohio State’s Agroecosystem Management Program. Matt has participated in several research projects to evaluate management approaches that build soil health while also improving the land\, surrounding ecosystems\, and community. He is currently exploring silvopasture establishment and the logistics of grazing cover crops on neighboring farms. SUMMARY:Tree Nuts Farm Tour
DESCRIPTION:Nut and Horse Farms is a small-scale commercial farm focused on owners Joe Hietter and Amy Rothe-Hietter’s two passions: trees and horses. One side of the farm grows tree nuts and some fruit trees. The other side is dedicated to horse husbandry.  \nTheir nut tree orchard consists of chestnut\, hazelnut\, black walnut\, heartnut\, butternut\, pecan\, hickory\, and hican (cross between pecan and hickory) trees. They have permaculture implemented\, and will explain what is involved in growing nut trees with a number of examples of their successes and failures. \nPlease follow signs and the address below when arriving to find parking. DESCRIPTION:Join Rural Action’s Forestry team to learn what conditions to look for when growing non-timber forest products (NTFP’s). \nAre you interested in growing edible and medicinal plants on your land? Do you have the right growing conditions on your site? \nLearn about native forest botanicals\, their preferred site conditions (slope\, aspect\, moisture\, etc.)\, and indicator plants. We’ll discuss site preparation and cultivation methods\, processing considerations\, market opportunities\, and value-adding options. We’ll also introduce you to some helpful mapping and production estimation tools. \nThis workshop includes a classroom component and a hands-on field excursion. They sell their products through a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program where customers subscribe ahead of the season to receive a customizable box of vegetables each week.
